Occupational Therapists

Occupational Therapists help people improve their daily lives through advancing their ability to perform tasks at home and at work, some of which are taken for granted until the ability to do them is lost. OT's work with individuals who have conditions that are mentally, physically, developmentally or emotionally disabling. Assistance provided may include working to improve motor skills or tasks such as working with computers or cooking. Sometimes assistance involves things as simple as bathing or eating. Occupational Therapists also instruct people with permanent disabilities such as spinal cord injuries, brain injuries, cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy and work with specific age groups that require additional assistance, such as older people who are losing their motor skills or babies who have yet to develop them.

Occupational Therapists are university-trained, (www.caot.ca) regulated health professionals whose unique training enables them to understand not only the medical and physical limitations of a disability or injury but also the psycho-social factors that affect an individual's ability to function independently. Their approach is based on research that proves that an individual's ability to engage in "everyday" activity and tasks increases health and well-being.
