Understanding Stroke: A Workshop for Families & Friends

This workshop is for survivors, families and friends who want to learn more about life after a stroke.

Workshop Description…

This is a chance for survivors, families and friends to learn about how the brain works, stroke and recovery. We also talk about life after a stroke, including strategies to help and available resources.

Workshop Format…

• This 3 hour education session is facilitated by a doctor and educator from the Acquired Brain Injury Program at GF Strong Rehab Centre

• It is open, informal and a chance to learn from others whose lives are changed by a stroke

• Your concerns, questions and experiences guide the session

What will I learn?

You will learn about:

• the brain and how it works

• the many changes that happen after a stroke

• practical rehabilitation strategies to help

• life after stroke and resources to help you through your journey

Wheelchair Seating & Positioning In Community: Practical Applications

Presenters: Jo-Anne Chisholm MSc. and Joanne Yip BSR are occupational therapists who have specialized in wheelchair seating and positioning since 1986. They have worked in a variety of settings, from clinic to community with adults with a range of disabilities. Jo-Anne and Joanne have presented extensively on seating and were co-presented the Mundy award for outstanding contributions to the field by the Canadian Adaptive Seating and Mobility Association in 1999.

Overview: A hands-on, intensive two-day workshop for occupational therapists and physiotherapists working with adults and adolescents in the community. Designed for therapists with beginner to intermediate seating skills, the focus will be on the seating process from assessment to follow up of targeted outcomes. Limited participation.

Objectives: The participant will be able to:

1. understand and articulate principles of seating

2. perform a complete seating assessment

3. understand roles of client, therapist, vendor and service technician

4. collaborate in identification of targeted outcomes for seating

5. determine product parameters for equipment trials

6. provide justification for seating requests

7. initiate the process to achieve optimal seating set-up

8. follow up on targeted outcomes of seating

Course Outline:

• Introduction to the seating process in community

o principles of intervention

o assessment and rationale

• Mat assessment – a practical session with clients

• Matching seating needs with products – practical with clients

o targeting outcomes

o product parameters

o choosing equipment and components

• Wrapping up the process
