Understanding Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI): A Workshop for Families & Friends

This workshop is for survivors, families and friends who want to learn more about life after a traumatic brain injury.

Is there a cost? 

No, this workshop is free for family and friends to attend.

Cost for students and non- Vancouver Coastal Health staff.

Workshop Description… 

This is a chance for survivors, families and friends to learn about how the brain works, brain injury and recovery. We also talk about life after a traumatic brain injury, including strategies to help and available resources.

Workshop Format… 

• This 3 hour education session is facilitated by a doctor and educator from the Acquired Brain Injury Program at GF Strong Rehab Centre

• It is open, informal and a chance to learn from others whose lives are changed by brain injury

• Your concerns, questions and experiences guide the session

What will I learn? 

You will learn about:

• the brain and how it works

• the many changes that happen after a brain injury

• practical rehabilitation strategies to help

• life after brain injury, and resources to help you through your journey

Women’s Only Trauma Sensitive Yoga Therapy Classes

When: 5 Tuesday evenings from 6:30 – 7:45pm, November 13th to December 11th, 2012.  Please arrive 10 minutes early.

No experience necessary. Classes accessible to everyone, regardless of physical ability, and are designed for students to have control over what they are doing with their bodies at all times. Nicole is experienced in and trained to provide safe, professional guidance.

Traumatic events often result in isolation and feelings of helplessness. Traumatic stressors can cause symptoms, including anxiety and depression, which in turn may lead individuals to develop a variety of dysfunctional coping strategies. Yoga Therapy can help trauma survivors by introducing better coping skills, and helping them to use their breath and body sensations to connect to the present moment.

We Will Explore:

  • Feeling comfortable in our bodies
  • Self-regulation skills
  • Improving our ability to direct attention away from ruminative thought processes
  • Breathing
  • Moving
  • Strengthening
  • Stretching
  • Resting

Building Community Connections: A Workshop for Survivors, Families and Friends

Workshop Description…

This is an opportunity for survivors, families and friends of people with a stroke or brain injury to learn about some of the services and programs available in their communities.

Families and survivors will be able to meet with one another and learn from each others’ personal experiences.

Everyone is welcome.

Registration is not required, although we would like to know how many of your family members and friends will be joining us. Please let us know by contacting 604-737-6269.

Workshop Format…

• This is a 2 hour workshop facilitated by the Community Intervention Coordinator from the Acquired Brain Injury Program at GF Strong Rehabilitation Centre.

• The first half of the workshop is an open discussion around existing resources and how to access them.

• 2-3 survivors and/or caregivers will present during the second half of the workshop. They will each share their personal journeys and discuss some of the successes and challenges they encountered in returning to the community.

• The workshop is interactive, with open group discussions, opportunities for sharing and problem solving with others.

AN INTERDISCIPLINARY APPROACH TO PRESSURE ULCER MANAGEMENT IN THE COMMUNITY

This practical 2 day workshop is in- tended for occupational therapists who wish to increase their knowledge and expand their role in pressure manage- ment. It highlights the interdisciplinary work of the nurse and OT in prevention and management of pressure ulcers.

DAY 1:

Presenters outline their roles in pressure ulcer assessment and review a variety of intervention strategies. The primary equipment focus on Day One is beds and mattresses.

DAY 2:

Day Two includes the use of pressure mapping in assessment and prescription with plenty of opportunity to work with XSensor & FSA. The equipment focus for Day Two is on wheelchairs, seating and cushions.

OBJECTIVES

Participants will:

1. Acquire clinical skills to perform skin health assessment.

2. Learn correct skin health termi- nology.

3. Understand basics of skin health and pressure ulcer heal- ing.

4. Understand complimentary roles of OT and nursing in pressure management.

5. Learn to stage, measure and describe a wound

6. Practice using a pressure map system.

7. Learntheutilityofpressure mapping in clinical practice.

8. Work with a variety of pressure management equipment and be able to select and justify with objective rationale.
